Just 40 km west of Strasbourg, near Schirmeck, Rocher-École de Wackenbach is a small, south-west-facing climbing area ideal for families with young children. With a maximum height of 35 meters and about 20 routes, it also offers a few two-pitch climbs - perfect for beginners.
Rocher-École de Wackenbach
The biggest advantage of this site is its easy access: the parking lot is right in front of the crag, making it especially convenient for families. While it shares similarities with popular Alsatian spots like Klingenthal, Wackenbach’s unique highlight is a gentle, slab-like route (grades 3b, 3c) that feels like a natural stone slide - perfect for introducing children to climbing.
There are also vertical lines graded 4b and 5b for beginner adults, and more experienced climbers can enjoy Le Dièdre (6b). It’s a great spot to practice multi-pitch basics like belaying from the second and rappelling.
One downside: there's little shade. When I first visited in August, the summer sun was intense, making conditions tough for both climbers and belayers. So it’s best to visit in cooler weather or early in the day.
That said, Wackenbach is a friendly, educational site - ideal for newcomers and families looking to share a calm and enriching climbing experience in the heart of the Northern Vosges.
