Discover the Magic of the Colmar Christmas Market: A Storybook Holiday Experience You Can’t Miss

A magical visit to the 2024 Colmar Christmas Market: What to Expect

Christmas is a time of joy, wonder and warmth, and few places capture this spirit better than Colmar, a charming town in northeastern France. Each year, the Colmar Christmas Market transforms its medieval streets into a sparkling winter wonderland. This year's theme, l'âme de Noël (the heart of Christmas), perfectly captures the essence of this extraordinary event.

Whether you're a seasoned traveler or dreaming of your first visit, let me take you on a journey through my memories of the 2024 Colmar Christmas Market - and inspire you to make it part of your own holiday traditions.

Why Colmar is the ultimate holiday destination

Nestled in the Grand Est region of France, Colmar is a must-visit holiday destination that offers an enchanting blend of history, architecture, and festive cheer. Just a 30-minute train ride from Strasbourg - known as the "Capitale de Noël" (Capital of Christmas) - Colmar offers a more intimate yet equally magical Christmas experience. Known for its well-preserved medieval and Renaissance architecture, Colmar also boasts a reputation as the "Capital of Alsace Wine," adding an extra touch of local flavor to your visit.

But it is in late November that Colmar shines brightest. With six markets spread throughout the old town and some 200 charming wooden chalets, the Christmas Market attracts visitors from all over the world. In 2023, it welcomed 1.7 million visitors - and this year promises to be even more magical.

A picture-perfect Christmas market

Imagine a scene right out of a storybook: 760 fir trees, 15 miles of Christmas lights, and streets filled with the aroma of mulled wine and fresh baked goods. The soft glow of the lights reflects off the colorful half-timbered buildings, creating a warm and romantic atmosphere.

My favorite spots at the market
Place des Dominicains

Start your journey here, where 60 chalets overflow with handmade ornaments and delicious Alsatian specialties. It's tempting to linger, but with so much to explore, pace yourself!

Place de l'Ancienne Douane & Koïfhus

The beating heart of the Christmas Market, this area is home to Colmar's oldest public building, the Koïfhus. Step inside to find unique, locally made gifts. Outside, you'll find the Schwendi Fountain, designed by Bartholdi (creator of the Statue of Liberty), surrounded by festive chalets.

Don't miss the nearby Maison Pfister, a favorite of Studio Ghibli fans - it inspired Sophie's hat shop in Howl's Moving Castle.

Petite Venise

Often called the most romantic part of Colmar, Petite Venise lives up to its name with picturesque canals and illuminated wooden houses. It's magical by day, but truly unforgettable at night.

Near Fontaine Roesselmann

This smaller market near Petite Venise offers a quieter, more intimate experience. Here I discovered unique crafts and soaked up the warmth of a community gathering place.

Insider Tips for First-Time Visitors
1. Plan around opening hours

* Weekdays: 10:00-19:00

* Friday - Sunday: 10:00-20:00

Arriving early allows you to explore at your own pace, while visiting after sunset offers the chance to see the markets bathed in a romantic glow.

2. Understand the market layout

* Don't confuse the Noël Féérique on Place Rapp with the main Christmas market. While it features a festive amusement park and family-friendly activities, it's a separate attraction.

Why to visit the Colmar Christmas Market

The Colmar Christmas Market is not just an event - it's an experience. From the dazzling lights to the inviting aromas of mulled wine and gingerbread, every corner offers something special. Whether you're looking for unique gifts, sampling delicious local treats or simply soaking up the atmosphere, you'll find moments to treasure.
