The Vosges Mountains in northeastern France are a stunning destination renowned for their majestic nature and breathtaking scenery. In addition to hiking, rock climbing is a popular activity, with excellent climbing areas that are perfect for beginners and novice climbers. There's something magical about challenging your body while immersing yourself in nature.
In this article, I introduce three of the most popular climbing areas for beginners and novice climbers: Muhlberg, Ziegelberg, and Falkenstein.
Muhlberg:Your Gateway to Climbing Success
Located about 35 km northwest of Strasbourg, Muhlberg is an ideal climbing area for beginners. This charming spot features two small peaks, Le Château and La Chapelle, with heights up to 15 meters and a total of 58 routes. From Le Château, you can enjoy a picturesque view over the quaint Alsatian villages.
Muhlberg offers an abundance of beginner-friendly routes (6a/6b). Despite its compact size, the flat terrain makes it comfortable for families and newcomers. While it can get busy, with full parking lots and climbers, the allure of Muhlberg’s natural beauty and climbing experiences continues to draw many enthusiasts.
The climb to the rock face is a short 15-minute hike from the parking lot, but watch out for mountain bikers sharing the trail.
Ziegelberg: Focused Climbing in a Tranquil Forest
Situated about 40 km north of Strasbourg, Ziegelberg is a serene climbing area perfect for beginners. This area boasts around 55 routes spread across seven sectors, with a maximum height of 15 meters. The main attractions are the vertical wall areas (Secteur Hedera Helix & Secteur Historique) and the slab area (Secteur du Masque), with most climbers favoring the vertical wall.
While Muhlberg suits those looking for 6a/6b routes, Ziegelberg offers slightly more challenging climbs (6a+/6b). Notable is the "Shark Attack" route (7b), a short but thrilling climb.
The approach from the parking lot is flat and accessible, winding through a peaceful forest that provides shade from the sun.
Falkenstein: Multi-Pitch Adventures for Beginners
About 40 km south of Strasbourg lies Falkenstein, a unique climbing area known for its gneiss rock, which closely resembles granite.
This area is perfect for beginners and offers a rare opportunity for multi-pitch climbing in the Northern Vosges. Falkenstein features approximately 45 routes, with heights up to 50 meters, and offers multi-pitch climbing (2 pitches). This area provides more routes in the 3b to 5c range, making it ideal for beginners. Its gentle slabs are especially accommodating for young children and parents, creating a fun and safe environment for family climbing adventures.
There are two ways to reach the climbing spot from the parking lot: a challenging mountain route (about an hour) and a more accessible flat route (around 40 minutes). Despite the length, the relatively easy path makes it a favorite for families. However, it's crucial to familiarize yourself with the route, as the numerous hiking trails can be confusing.

The climbing areas of Muhlberg, Ziegelberg, and Falkenstein in the Vosges Mountains are beloved by climbers for their stunning natural beauty and beginner-friendly routes. Even first-time rock climbers will feel comfortable and welcomed in these scenic spots.
