Triumphs and Trials at Château du Waldeck, Alsace's Hidden Gem in the Green Heart of France's Vosges

After a stretch of unstable weather, May finally blessed us with stable, dry, and sunny days - a climber's dream. On one such perfect day, we embarked on an adventure to Château du Waldeck, nestled about 50 km from the picturesque city of Strasbourg.

Waldeck may be small in size, but it packs a punch with its maximum height of 30 meters and a plethora of 63 routes to explore. The crown jewels of this climbing haven are undoubtedly “Courant d'air,” facing northwest, and “Les Mains noires”, basking in the southeast sun, with a total of around thirty routes.

Shaded by a canopy of trees, it's a welcome relief from the scorching summer sun, though be prepared to fend off a battalion of mosquitoes.

If there's one route that encapsulates the essence of Waldeck, it's “Les Mains noires (7a+)”, lending its name to the entire climbing area. Another gem, “Aurore et dame nation (7b+)”, caught my attention this time around. Starting from the same position as “Les Mains noires (7a+)”, it ventures towards the right, offering a thrilling challenge.

While many climbers pinpoint the crux as the steep incline from the last bolt to the anchor, for me, it's the dynamic move right off the bat. Following the dynamic sequences often seen in climbing gyms, the delicate balance required to navigate through the subsequent palm-stretching moves (palming) made this climb truly memorable.

Château du Waldeck may be petite compared to some of its counterparts, but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in character and challenge. It's a place where every ascent leaves an indelible mark on your memory, beckoning you to return and conquer its rugged beauty time and time again.
