Colmar, nestled in northeastern France, is a charming medieval haven that beckons travelers seeking the essence of old-world France. This picturesque city, merely a short train ride from Strasbourg, boasts a rich history dating back to its vibrant commercial days during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Today, it proudly holds the title of Alsace's Wine Capital, a testament to its enduring heritage.
The heart of Colmar's allure, especially during the festive season, is its renowned Christmas market. With over 1.5 million visitors in 2023 and an array of 190 local chalets, it's a vibrant celebration that draws in visitors from far and wide.
My journey to the Colmar Christmas Market began with a glimpse of its enchantment in 2020, amidst the glimmering lights that adorned the old town. Though the Christmas market was cancelled due to the Corona disaster (COVID-19), the radiant illumination painted an indelible picture in my mind.
Years flew by, but the anticipation persisted. Finally, the long-awaited day arrived, coinciding serendipitously with the market's grand opening! The ceremony, held against the backdrop of the old customs house, was like a story I had seen in a picture book. Yet, the countdown caught me off guard - a sudden burst of twinkling lights left me momentarily bewildered, a scene worth capturing had I not been caught in surprise!
Despite missing the mayor's countdown cue, the bustling atmosphere filled with locals and visitors alike made for a memorable spectacle. Even the absence of the Mawem brothers, renowned local athletes, couldn't dampen the festive spirit.
Post-ceremony, the true delight awaited - a leisurely stroll through the market's enchanting lanes. The old town, straight out of a storybook, exuded a cozy Christmas aura. Delicate lighting accentuated the architectural marvels, rendering the evening walk even more magical.
Highlights not to be missed include the charming ambiance of Place des Dominicains and Petite Venise, where the Hotel Hostellerie Le Maréchal dons its Alsatian-style Christmas attire. Ghibli enthusiasts, don't overlook Maison Pfister; its octagonal tower served as inspiration for Sophie's hatter in "Howl's Moving Castle."
🎄 Notable among the festive delights is "Le Sapin de Colmar."
Unlike Strasbourg, there isn't a singular iconic tree, but the variety of unique Christmas trees - a staggering 871 in total - is a joy to explore.
The market, spread across six locations within the old town, offers distinct experiences at each venue:
1️⃣ Place des Dominicains:
A serene market complementing the Dominican Church.
2️⃣ Place de l’Ancienne Douane:
Where sculptures by Auguste Bartholdi frame the chalets, blending seamlessly with the landscape.
3️⃣ Place Jeanne d'Arc:
A glimpse of traditional French allure with a bounty of Alsatian delights.
4️⃣ Le Marché de Noël des enfants à la Petite Venise:
A family-friendly market nestled along the canal.
5️⃣ Le Marché intérieur du Koïfhus:
Delve into the city's history within the oldest public building in Colmar.
6️⃣ Le Marché gourmand, Rue de la montagne verte:
A culinary haven offering exquisite local flavors.
Visiting the Colmar Christmas Market isn't merely an outing; it's a passage into a fairy-tale world where history, culture, and festivity intertwine, leaving an indelible mark on every visitor's heart.
