Discover the Enchanting Magic of the 2023 Strasbourg Christmas Market 🤶🏻🎅🏻🎄

In a miraculous turn of events! the gray, rainy skies that had draped Strasbourg for weeks seemed to part ways, unveiling a sight that lifted spirits and hearts - the grand opening of the Strasbourg Christmas Market on November 24, 2023. Suddenly, the entire Old Town twinkled with a joyous celebration.

Steeped in history dating back to 1750, the Strasbourg Christmas Market stands proud as France's oldest and one of Europe's most cherished seasonal festivals.

Envision this: 3 million visitors, 11 bustling markets, and over 300 charming chalets. That's the promise of the Strasbourg Christmas Market in 2023, beckoning travelers from around the globe.

The customary Friday evening ceremony at Place Kléber, igniting the market with shimmering lights, saw a slight shift in 2023. Yet, the moment the market stirred to life, my heart leaped with joy - it was pure magic, an experience beyond words.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame-de-Strasbourg

At the heart of this enchantment stand the Strasbourg Cathedral, a breathtaking spectacle during the Christmas Market. From Rue de la Mercière, the view painted a scene straight from a masterpiece - In particular, the rose window, which is built by German architect Erwin von Steinbach, and angel illumination, are a spectacular sight.

However, a flicker of concern remained. Will the famous rose window be illuminated in 2023?

The usual view from the window was not there, but the grandeur of the cathedral prevailed and was a sight not to be missed.

Inside the Strasbourg Cathedral, the ambiance swelled with nativity crèches and stunning tapestries depicting the essence of Christmas.

A visit inside the cathedral promises an immersive dive into the season's magic, leaving indelible memories to treasure.

🎄Le Grand Sapin 2023 de Strasbourg

Enter Place Kléber, home to the towering symbol of the Strasbourg Christmas Market : the grand 30 meter tall, 80 year old tree.

Adorned with ornaments radiating the warmth of Christmas, it stands as an unmissable spectacle.

Though, over the years, Christmas tree hasn't always had a smooth journey - 2013 saw it leaning, and 2017 necessitated a swift replacement due to faults. Cut from the forests of Bousson in the Vosges mountains, the 2023 edition of the tree graced Place Kléber without a hitch.

Its hourly light shows, accompanied by music from 16:00 to 23:00 (No music at 22:00 and 23:00), promise a dazzling display that remains a surprise, urging visitors to time their arrival just right.

Comparing the 2022 and 2023 trees reveals a seemingly taller silhouette for the latter, albeit with varying perspectives that might play tricks on cameras - a tidbit to note for photography enthusiasts.

Christkindelsmärik de Place Broglie

Then there's Christkindelsmärik de Place Broglie, a place right out of a storybook. Steeped in tradition since Strasbourg's German tenure in 1871, it exudes a tantalizing aroma of cinnamon and cloves. Amidst the delicious food stalls, don't miss the adorned City Hall - an ideal photo spot.

While the chalet count dwindled since 2021, this market's relaxed, uncrowded vibe infuses a newfound charm into the Christmas Market experience.

Gates of Strasbourg Capitale de Noël

The very gates that usher visitors arriving by long-distance bus into Strasbourg, the Capitale de Noël, evoke an anticipatory thrill for the upcoming Christmas markets.

Stepping off at the train station leads you through iconic landmarks like Place Kléber and the cathedral before encountering this gate - It may be a little off-putting, but it's a place that guarantees great photo opportunities.

Amidst the rich tapestry of historic traditions, this year's Strasbourg Christmas market boasts novel additions. Gone is the traditional opening ceremony, replaced by fresh elements such as a striking Christmas tree gracing the front of the station at la Gare de Strasbourg, alongside an array of enhanced activities for families in Place Louise Weiss and beyond.

One standout newcomer is the "Giant Christmas Tree in front of Strasbourg Station." Standing tall at 10 meters, this unconventional yet captivating Christmas Tree isn't your typical natural wonder. Crafted from plastic, it intricately mimics 77 miniature Strasbourg Cathedrals - a stunning testament to modern innovation. And here's the kicker: this tree isn't just any plastic creation - it's a marvel crafted by a 3D printer, utilizing recycled materials in a creative, eco-conscious manner.

The market's evolution doesn't stop at innovative aesthetics. It extends a warm embrace to environmental stewardship. Pioneering initiatives championing sustainability are taking center stage- think renewable energy powering the vibrant lighting that illuminates the market's pathways. This conscientious shift positions the Strasbourg Christmas Market not just as a festive celebration but as a forward-looking event, marrying its timeless charm with a fresh, eco-friendly allure.
